Claus von Bülow is a British-born socialite best known for being tried and later acquitted in the 1980 attempted murder case involving his wife, Martha "Sunny" von Bülow.

During the trial of Freddy Quimby for the assault of waiter Mr. Lacoste, Lisa expressed concern that political influence was affecting the proceedings. Bart replied that “the system works,” comparing Freddy's situation to the famous case of Claus von Bülow.
