Richard Appel (born May 21, 1963) is an American writer, producer and former attorney. He served as a writer, staff writer, story editor, producer, co-executive producer and consulting producer for The Simpsons. He also worked for Family Guy and co-created The Cleveland Show.

At the time Appel wrote "Mother Simpson", he was married to the novelist Mona Simpson. He named Homer's mother Mona after her.
