"I don't have anything planned, but I guess I should talk about God, right? Church. Pastor. Makes sense I should talk about God. But the truth is, I woke up this morning and I wasn't really sure if I believed in God. It's okay. Everything's fine. I-I just woke up with some doubt. Like many of you did, too, I'm sure."

Synopsis[edit]

"When Bode, a young charismatic new preacher, comes to town and shakes things up at church, Reverend Lovejoy investigates his mysterious past."

Plot[edit]

The First Church of Springfield is mostly empty as the service starts, with even the choir being late. Reverend Lovejoy tries to get the congregation involved but the congregation doesn't care. Meanwhile, Bode Wright turns up to Springfield. As the congregation leaves the church at the end of the service, Bode enters the church to apply for the job of junior minister after he saw an advert on Christlist, placed by Helen Lovejoy. Bode gets the job after a short interview, with Helen offering to let him stay with them, to Reverend Lovejoy's annoyance. The homeless and Alcoholics Anonymous then show up at the church.

Homer and Marge go to marriage counseling at the church after Homer sold the house without telling Marge. Reverend Lovejoy then hears his train set going and goes to sort out Bode. That night, Bode was sleeping on the train set and Reverend Lovejoy starts playing with it to bother him. The next morning, Lovejoy takes Bode around town and takes him to senior Bingo. Whilst at Bingo, Lovejoy starts to lose his voice.

The next church service, Lovejoy loses his voice completely. Bode Wright then takes over as the pastor for the service and proves a hit with everyone, singing "Amazing Grace" to the congregation and gets them involved. As the service goes on, more and more people turn up to the church. Homer even starts to love church, calling it the best church ever. After the service, the congregation go to A Batter Place to eat pancakes. During the meal, Lisa and Bode bond together over being vegetarians, science, Buddhism and jazz music. Bode then tells the congregation about a Chinese proverb, which the congregation like. Lovejoy then tells a culturally insensitive joke which annoys everyone.

The next day, the church council go to Lovejoy to tell him that he's fired. Reverend Lovejoy and Helen then decide to go to Michigan to dig up some dirt on Bode. Meanwhile, Homer and Marge go to Bode to get marriage counseling, with Bode helping them immediately. Later that day, Lisa goes to see Bode to meditate with him. Lisa tells Bode that he has brought the town into a full-blown religious revival, with many people turning back to religion. Meanwhile, in Traverse City in Michigan, Reverend Lovejoy manages to find a newspaper article that could be the downfall of Bode.
