- The title of the episode is a possible reference to American rock band Alice in Chains.
- The picture Channel 6 uses for the Osaka Flu is Godzilla with an ice pack and a thermometer.

- The way Otto is attacked by the flu cloud is a parody of one the roof tower scene in Q – The Winged Serpent, a 1982 American monster horror film.
- The Itchy & Scratchy Show episode "Germs of Endearment" is a spoofs on Terms of Endearment.
- Ned Flanders laughs about a bedroom joke on Married... with Children, the famous American TV sitcom. Ned also mentions FOX when he remembers its fictional slogan: "watch FOX and be damned for all eternity".
- Bart asks Marge for some Flinstons chewable morphine.
- Homer is afraid of missing The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo, an American sitcom that ran between 1979 and 1981.
