1F is the fifth production season of The Simpsons. David Mirkin was the showrunner for the season. The episodes mostly aired in broadcast season 5 on Fox, with two rollover episodes from the production season airing in broadcast season 6. The episodes aired from October 14, 1993 with "Homer Goes to College", to September 11, 1994 with "Lisa's Rival".

After learning that Homer is seriously underqualified for his own job, Mr. Burns enrolls him at Springfield University. While there, Homer befriends three nerds and accidentally gets them expelled.

When a vending-machine mishap forces Homer to cancel his plans with Marge, she has a girls' night out with their neighbor Ruth Powers. It turns out that Ruth is somewhat of a wanted criminal, having stolen her ex-husband's car. In a story in the style of Thelma and Louise, Marge and Ruth lead Chief Wiggum, Homer and a large number of police on a high-speed long-distance car chase. Meanwhile, Lionel Hutz babysits the children and takes the opportunity to assume a new identity.

In the first act, when Homer announces he will sell his soul for a donut, the Devil, who is actually Ned Flanders, shows up to take him up on the offer. In the second Act, while riding to school, Bart believe he sees a malevolent gremlin on the side of the bus. And in the final act, Mr. Burns is Count Burns, a vampire in a spooky castle.

Bart accidentally has the entire town emulating his actions, thanks to a feel-good therapist. James Brown guest stars as himself.

Bart and Milhouse find $20 which they use to go on a Squishee bender in downtown Springfield. The next morning, Bart has no memory of what happened and is shocked to find out that he joined the Junior Campers, and the patrol leader is none other than Ned Flanders. Now a full-fledged member, Bart must attend the Campers' father-son rafting trip with Homer.

A female employee, Mindy Simmons, is hired at the nuclear plant. Homer finds her attractive and learns that they have many interests in common. When Homer learns that the attraction is mutual, he is tempted to have an affair with Mindy. In the meantime, Bart makes friends with the school nerds when a series of medical treatments (glasses, scalp salve, special shoes and voice-changing throat spray) transform him into one.

During a town meeting, Principal Skinner pitches the idea of opening a casino. Mr. Burns adopts this notion and builds the "Mr. Burns' Casino." Homer takes a job as a blackjack dealer and Marge takes up gambling. At home, Lisa is having difficulties with her school project and Bart opens a treehouse casino.

While a cat burglar prowls Springfield and evades capture, Homer forms a vigilante group to protect the city. But the power quickly goes to his head and an unlikely source figures out the identity of the cat burglar.

Apu loses his job at the Kwik-E-Mart after he sells Homer tainted meat. Homer feels bad and lets Apu live at the Simpson's home while he is unemployed. In an attempt to get his job back, Apu and Homer travel to India to talk with the head of the Kwik-E-Mart corporation. Meanwhile, James Woods fills in Apu's position.

After Bart sneaks away from a field trip to the box factory, he finds himself working as Krusty's assistant. Krusty lets Bart act out a scene on one of his gags, but Bart messes up the line and says, "I didn't do it." The phrase is an instant success and leads Bart to his fifteen minutes of fame.

Lisa challenges the makers of the Malibu Stacy doll to create a less sexist and pro-feminist doll. When they won't listen, Lisa enlists the help of Mr. Smithers to find the original creator of Malibu Stacy, Stacy Lovell. Together Lisa and Miss Lovell create Lisa Lionheart in an effort to positively influence young girls.

After seeing their popularity decline (as reflected by lower TV ratings for shuttle launches), NASA decides to improve its public image by sending a man into space to whom the average American can relate. In this case, Joe Average is Homer Simpson.

Homer reluctantly goes to a football game with Ned. After Ned shows Homer a good time, they become close friends. Little to Homer's realization, Ned actually starts to have negative feelings toward him.

Bart wins a radio contest which allows him to choose between two prizes: $10,000 or an elephant. Bart picks the elephant and names him Stampy. Homer and Marge decide to give the elephant away because he costs too much to feed, so Bart and Stampy run away together.

Nearly drowning in the bathtub, Mr. Burns decides to find an heir. He sees it in the form of Bart Simpson and coerces the young Simpson into staying with him.

It looks as if Lisa's days as the class brain are numbered when the new student proves to be smarter, younger, and plays the sax better than her. Meanwhile, Homer strikes white gold in the form of an over-turned Sugar truck.
