Synopsis

"When Marge and Lisa start a charity together, Marge is seduced by the money and prestige of Big Charity fundraising."

Plot

Whilst watching and betting on a Springfield Atoms game, Homer praises his "lucky ring", his wedding ring, as a good luck charm. When the Atoms lose and Homer makes money as a result, he celebrates and drops the ring into the floorboards under the house in the process. Homer goes into the crawlspace under the house to find the ring and gets attacked by skunks whilst he's down there. In the back garden, Marge cleans Homer off then takes his clothes to clean them. Marge reveals that she has a method of cleaning stinky clothes that works without needing a washing machine, just by using a few ingredients in an old pillow case. Lisa tells Marge that they could better the lives of people who don't have washing machines, like the homeless.

At the Springfield Squidport, Marge and Lisa start to give out the bags of ingredients to the homeless, or unhoused as Lisa calls them. They start to make a difference to the homeless people of Springfield, including Gil. When The Rich Texan sees their stall, he decides to give a charitable donation as a tax deduction to them. When he finds out that they're not a registered charity, he gets his accountant to fill in the paperwork to make them a charity and Marge and Lisa register as the Lisa M. Simpson Foundation.

The charity work goes well until they run out of baking soda. When Marge asks Lisa to get some more from the shop, Lisa is shocked to find that Marge uses Hand & Armor Baking Soda, whose company is pro-child labor. Lisa then decides to go around the world to find ethically sourced ingredients to use instead. While Homer and Lisa go to a Buddhist temple on top of a mountain to get baking soda, Marge is left to run the stall alone. A member of The Salvation Army then chases Marge off as he uses the space Marge was using. Bernice Hibbert sees this and decides to help Marge raise awareness for the charity and helps set up an office and gets brands to sponsor them. When Lisa returns, she's horrified to find that Marge has allowed products to become "bluewashed" and took a donation from Mr. Burns.

Marge and Lisa have a falling out over this until Marge tells Lisa that she has been "promoted" to "founder emeritus", which meant she no longer had any power in the charity. Marge and Lisa go through a rough patch, whilst Homer coaches Lisa through being fired and helps her get over it. Eventually, Lisa apologizes to Marge for how she acted and agrees to go to the opening of the Lisa M. Simpson Foundation Center with her. When Marge is in the limo on the way to the opening, she realizes that Lisa was right and the charity hasn't been doing anything meaningful. When she gets taken round the back of the Center, she finds that Gil is homeless again since the low-income housing he lived in was demolished to build the Lisa M. Simpson Foundation Center.

Marge storms into the event and complains about the lack of work the charity has been doing and then signs everything over to Lisa. Lisa then decides to turn the Lisa M. Simpson Foundation Center into a homeless shelter and she and Marge open the doors to the homeless, who immediately come in and start eating food. Mr. Burns then gives a speech about how they weren't there for charity, they were only there to make themselves look better. Marge and Lisa make up and get Lisa officially signed on as the head of the charity by the cowboy accountant.
