Vela Murphy is the ex-wife of Bleeding Gums Murphy. A jazz singer like her ex-husband, she is noted for her tiny voice, which earned her the nickname of "That Big Lady With the Little Voice." Her standard classics include Walking Ugly, Too Bruised to Crouch, and Get Off My Lap, Jack! By 1991, Vela and her husband were already divorced, but she still used the last name Murphy in a professional capacity, as when she performed at the Springfield Jazz Hole.^[1]
