Edwina was a woman Abe Simpson encountered in WWII in England, they had a good relationship and after he made her pregnant without knowing it he left England, nine months later she gave birth to Abbie. She saw Abe 50 - 60 years later and Abe and the family see Edwina and her daughter for the first time.
Supposedly, when Abe met Edwina in the war, he told her he was shipping out in the morning not knowing he really was shipping out. He got her pregnant and did not know until he met her while leaving London. Edwina is also the reason why Abe wants to go to London in the first place.
