Cultural references

• The title of the episode is a reference to Ray Bradbury's science-fiction book titled The Martian Chronicles.
• Homer saw the Flanders kids eating coddled eggs and later compared the eggs' orange color with "a sunset over a field of ripe Doritos".
• During Exploration Incorporated's film:
  • Two indigenous people travel by means of an outrigger canoe towards what was likely to be Hawaii.
  • The footage of a man and a Sherpa reaching the summit of a mountain and planting the flag of the UK is a reference to the 1953 British Mount Everest expedition in which Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Mount Everest.
  • The woman driving the deep-sea exploration submarine is a reference to American marine biologist Sylvia Earle.
