When Patty and Selma had a major argument, Selma started dating Merle because she knew Patty wouldn't like her dating him. When Patty woke up on the couch one morning, she was shocked to find that Merle had stayed the night, because one of their house rules was "no unvetted Merles without the approval of both twins." Merle then offered to cook eggs for both of them.
