Cultural references[edit]
- Bill and Marty mention the Kung Pao chicken when they played Chinese sounds.
- According to Ned, marriage is not all Jell-O with Cool Whip.
- Bart plays Cereal Killer, a play on serial killer, on his Game Boy Advance.
- Toucan Sam, the Trix Rabbit, Cap'n Crunch and Count Chocula are all featured in the game; they are, respectively, the mascots for Froot Loops, Trix, Cap'n Crunch and Count Chocula breakfast cereals.
- Bart says "I'm cuckoo for killing stuff!", a reference to Cocoa Puffs's catchphrase "I'm cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs!"
- When talking about limbo, Homer was not sure whether Sylvia meant the dance or the place where innocent souls go.
- During the limbo scene, the song "Limbo Rock" by Chubby Checker can be heard in the background, along with Homer and Sylvia singing it.
- Bart mentions American frontierman Davy Crockett when he had to stay in the Kozy Kabins.
- Homer asks Marge if she wanted to play Lakeside Boggle, a reference to the famous board game.
- Jimbo, Dolph and Kearney are reading Esquire, and they mention anti-nuclear advocate Helen Caldicott, director Julie Taymor and the Windsor knot.
- One of the hearts carved on the tree had "SBC + AT&T" written in it. The Southwestern Bell Corporation (SBC) was one of the seven independent companies owned by AT&T.
- The non-linear plot showing various points in Homer and Marge's relationship is very similar to the 1967 film Two for the Road, starring Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney.
- Bart and Homer mention some MPAA film ratings, including PG (Parental Guidance Suggested), R (Restricted) and PG-13 (Parents Strongly Cautioned).
Trivia[edit]
- This episode shows that Homer used to like Ned Flanders. It also explains why he hates him, after putting Homer and Marge in separate rooms. ("I can't believe I have to say this, but stupid Flanders!")
Goofs[edit]
- Alberto's shirt changes from blue to tan when he's thanking Marge.
