Soccer in action

Soccer is quite a popular sport played and watched in Springfield.

History

Bart playing soccer

Bart sat alone in the rain for hours after Homer failed to pick him up from soccer practice.[1]

The Simpson family went to watch a match in Springfield between Mexico and Portugal.[2]

One of the trailers the family had to sit through waiting for Shenani-Goats to start was for a family movie about a mummy who is brought back from the dead to play for a boy named Justin's soccer team, teaching him to believe in himself in the process.[3]

Homer was once the referee for Lisa's matches. Lisa watched a DVD of a World Cup game involving Brazil. The game got extremely violent and it was said that a statue of the Virgin Mary came to life and beat the holy snot out of the players. Ronaldo is a famous Soccer player who Homer has met.[4]

Lisa later gave a speech (for a contest at school) in which she praised Homer for his honesty and integrity as a soccer referee. A video of her speech went viral on the Internet, which led to FIFA officials recruiting Homer to referee at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.[5] . He gave El Divo a yellow card during the final.
