Cultural references

• This episode's couch gag is a reference to Chia Pets, and there is actually a Homer Chia Pet and a Bart Chia Pet people can purchase in real life.
• According to Homer, he was at Moe's celebrating St. Patrick's Day. He mentions some Irish-related things like the Blarney Stone and the Angela's Ashes film.
• Homer compares Marge with comedian Steve Martin when Homer found out she was not mad at him for ruining dinner.
• Drunken Donuts is a parody of the popular donut chain Dunkin' Donuts.
• Nigel's wife is from Piccadilly Circus and has a Cockney accent.
• Mr. Burns says Nigel was wrong about the Crimean War.
• Homer treats Nigel as Alfred, Batman's loyal British butler.
  • He later called Nigel Dr. Dolittle.
• Nigel said he once shared a hot tub with Ringo Starr and Princess Margaret.
• The Pancake syrup lady Homer imagined is very similar to Mrs. Butterworth's syrup bottle.

• When talking to Mr. Burns, Nigel refers to Smithers as "Your Boy Friday," a play on His Girl Friday.
• The jewelry that Smithers gives to Homer to give to Marge is in a blue Tiffany's box.
• The microbrew name "Hops-along Cassidy" is a reference to Hopalong Cassidy.

• Stogie is a parody of Sam from Casablanca.
  • Stogie plays "Moonglow" by Will Hudson on piano after Moe requested it.
• When Marge is going through Homer's flip-book, the song "(They Long to Be) Close to You" by The Carpenters plays.
  • The Gracie Films sequence from the ending of The Simpsons episodes is seen in the flip-book.
• Photos at the MoHo HOUSE include:
  • A Duff Blimp in the air approaching the building.
  • Moe with Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Philip.
  • Moe with Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy.
  • Moe and several people at the July 4th Ball in 1921, parodying the last scene of The Shining.

Trivia

• This is one of two episodes (the other being "Chief of Hearts") in which Lisa appears but doesn't have any lines. However, Yeardley Smith, her voice actress is still credited.
• In voice-over, Moe announces as an "interesting fact" that all the singers that sung The Simpsons logo tune are dead.
• There were a couple of fourth wall breaks in this episode:
  • A hand drawn Gracie Films gag is seen in Homer's flip-book.
  • In "Stogie's Song", Stogie sang the line "that's the ending of the show, except for the tag."
  • Moe also leaned on the fourth wall when he said "Methinks I see my opportunity" to the camera, only to reveal he was talking to Sideshow Mel, who he said he considered his friend.
• This is the first episode since "The Great Simpsina" to not start with the title card. In the case of Moho House, the episode starts with a fade in to the couch gag, then the TV credits, and after a nighttime view of Springfield, the title card letters are seen superimposed over a shot of 742 Evergreen Terrace. The letters zoom in similarly to the actual title screen with the clouds, but the letters just pop up instead of appearing. The camera zooms through the "P" without moving the background shot as Moe (offscreen) tells the audience to enjoy the show, and the episode begins.
  • This is also the first episode to start with the couch gag.

Continuity

• "(They Long to Be) Close to You" by The Carpenters plays again, which was the song that played when Homer and Marge first met in "The Way We Was". Moe also refers to this while it plays. It was also used in The Simpsons Movie.

Goofs

• Moe references Lenny blowing his nose on his talking bar rag, though he tossed the rag away and Santa's Little Helper took it previously. ("Moe Goes from Rags to Riches")
