The Scarecrow's head was seen in a picture being held by a winged monkey in Joan Bushwell's Serious Research book.[1]
Bart practiced for the role of the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz for a school play.[2]

When Ned told Homer that he always had a heart, Homer responded with, "Just like the Cowardly Lion." Carl then corrected him, saying that the Lion always had a heart; what he lacked was courage.
