Maggie wanted Homer to read the book to her as a bedtime story. He told her about a trip with the Flanders clan instead.[1]

Four years earlier, Homer was reading Lisa Are You My Mother? Lisa became scared of the book's story and asked to read something else instead. Homer suggested Hansel & Gretel, which Lisa also decided against. She then realized that all of her children's books, including The Brothers Grimmest, were scary.[2]
