He had been sentenced to death and was awaiting execution, but wasn't afraid to die because he thought his mother would come to visit him before he died. However, she did not come. When the time came for Johnny's execution, he was calling out in vain for his mother as the prison staff led him to the electric chair, strapped him in and threw the switch to electrocute him.
The scene made Marge feel very guilty about not visiting bank robber Dwight, whom she had previously promised to visit in jail and to whom Johnny Stabbo bore a strong resemblance.
