- The episode title is a pun on the novel Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad.
- Part of the episode is a parody of the Alfred Hitchcock movie Rear Window starring Jimmy Stewart. A Jimmy Stewart look-alike also shown looking back at Bart through a telescope and later yells out for "Grace" and the other star of Rear Window is Grace Kelly.
