The Walking Dead is a multimedia horror/drama franchise created by Robert Kirkman. It tells the stories of groups of survivors in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse.
The Walking Dead franchise began in 2003 with the black-and-white comic book series. The comic book series built a substantial fanbase and won several awards, and in 2010 AMC began airing a television series based on the comic book. The franchise has since spawned diverse other media, including:
- A companion TV series, Fear the Walking Dead, which began in 2015.
- Several web series that expand on the stories of characters and situations seen in passing on the TV shows.
- An aftershow, Talking Dead, which began in 2011 and airs in conjunction with new episodes of The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead.
- Numerous books, both original novels and compilations of the comic book.
- Video games, board games, and tabletop (miniatures-based) games.
The Walking Dead distinguishes itself from other entries in the zombie genre in that it can be considered character-based drama as well as horror. Robert Kirkman has said on several occasions that in the Walking Dead universe, fellow human survivors should be considered just as great a threat as the undead.
The Walking Dead has been referred to several times in various Simpsons media.
