Nelson watches BHO Now, a parody of HBO Now

• The episode name is a reference to the fungal skin infection athlete's foot.
• Springfield Math Team T-shirt includes "π ≠ a/b", meaning that π is an irrational number that cannot be divided by two integers.
• Travelling by taxi, Nelson stops by Capital City Convention Center just to hit the nerds of the math team. Then he requests the driver to drive to the Model UN.
• The math joke Homer laughs about forms the phrase "I ate some pie":
  • Imaginary unit i = √-1 (I)
  • Exponentiation 2^3 = 8 (eight)
  • Capital-sigma notation Σ (sum)
  • Number π (pi)
• Michael Bay produced the film of Waverly Hills Elementary School for the math contest against Springfield Elementary School.
  • While doing the film, Bay realized that quadratic equations were "hotter than a million Megan Foxes".
  • In the film, the kids from Waverly Hills transformed into the Power Rangers and then into a Rubik's Cube.

• When the nerds invest money in their school, the flag is changed to a digital one. Skinner is able to change the flag with a remote control to different flags, including the flag of China, a pirate flag, a Starfleet Federation flag (a reference to Star Trek), an anarchy flag, a Red Sox Nation flag, a "Reunite Pangea" flag and a Blockoland flag.
• Principal Skinner burns a cart of books in a book burning machine called the "Anti-Gutenberg 3000", the machine has a temperature display that says 451 degrees. This is a reference to the novel Fahrenheit 451, which is about a dystopian future where all books are burned, along with the houses they are kept in. The name Gutenberg is a reference to Johannes Gutenburg, the man who invented the printing press.
• The BHO Now app that Nelson used is a parody of HBO Now.
  • He's watching a parody of HBO's Game of Thrones on it.
• Miss Hoover mentions American general Robert E. Lee.
• Skinner confuses Waldorf education with Where's Waldo?, the children puzzle book and also with Waldorf salad.
• Ms Hoover reads How To Know Higher Worlds, a real-world book by Rudolf Steiner.
• Homer and the school children sing a modified version of "Ode to Joy". At the end, Homer thinks he is like Beethoven, but confusing the composer to the dog from the movie of the same name. He even mentioned Charles Grodin, the actor who played the role of dog's owner George Newton.
• When Willie says his (pointed) hat is not a "sorting hat", he is referring to the hat in Harry Potter that tells new students to which House they are assigned. Willie then animates his hat to act like a sorting hat and spit out the name of a school.
• The crowd at the math competition raise signs that read "Education Satisfies Peculiar Nerds". Marge tells Homer that ESPN is not covering the competition.
• Lisa drinks Mountain Doo, a parody of Mountain Dew.

• The math joke seen on the board (√-1 2^3 Σπ) means "i 8 sum pi" (I ate some pie).
• Despite Bart seemingly replacing Database as team captain, Cosine is the one not present at the last competition.
