"Flanders' Ladder" is the twenty-first and final episode of broadcast season 29 of The Simpsons and the six hundred thirty-ninth episode overall. It originally aired on May 20, 2018. The episode was written by J. Stewart Burns and directed by Matthew Nastuk. It guest stars Jackie Mason as Hyman Krustofsky.
"Flanders' Ladder" was dedicated to the memory of Tom Wolfe, who died on May 14.
Synopsis[edit]
- After getting struck by lightning, Bart has nightmares where he gets visited by ghosts. Bart helps each ghost get closure and move on to the afterlife.
Plot[edit]
On a stormy night, Bart tricks Lisa into playing the Scary Maze Game and posts a photo of her surrounded by his dirty clothes on the Internet. At the dinner table, the internet line gets hit by lightning, cutting the family off from it.
To pass the time, the family digs up their old VHS tapes, but when the VHS player breaks, Bart and Homer go to Ned's house to steal his router. Bart climbs the ladder to the attic but gets hit by lightning, while another strike hits the line, bringing it back on. At Springfield General Hospital, Bart is in a coma and Lisa gets revenge on him by giving him nightmares.
She makes him wake up in his bed and has the ghost of Maude Flanders appear to scare him. Next, she sends in Milhouse while he decorates the treehouse with crosses to keep ghosts out, though that doesn't work, as the ghost of Maude returns. Bart manages to scare her off with Homer's socks.
Milhouse suggests he talk to his psychiatrist, Samuel Elkins, about seeing ghosts. It turns out Elkins is a ghost too, and Bart helps him move on to the afterlife. More ghosts begin to appear, and Bart starts helping them, though Lisa's interference causes his condition to worsen. Homer returns from Krusty Burger and tells Bart he's dead from walking that far.
Because of this, Bart finally agrees to help Maude. She wants revenge on Homer and the bullies and kills him by throwing shirts at him. To prevent Homer from going to Heaven—thus dying for real—Bart shoots the shirt into the Heaven light. He then wakes up and tells Lisa he has discovered how everyone is going to die.

Bart explodes fireworks in Skinner's direction, shouting "Skinner sucks." Skinner dies at 119, running over Bart in his wheelchair, causing Bart to die at 80. Lisa dies at 98, realizing her meditation was a waste of time. Ralph dies at 120 as a king, killed by his son. Maggie becomes a constellation and never dies.

Originally, it looks like the episode was going to be called The Talking Dead, a reference to The Walking Dead.[1]
