"The Clown Stays in the Picture" was dedicated in memory of former production manager Trista H. Navarro, who died on February 6.

Synopsis[edit]

Krusty reveals the untold story of his past while working to produce the movie The Sands of Space. While serving as personal assistants on the film, Bart and Lisa learn about the early years of their parents' relationship.

Plot[edit]

At a roadblock, Bart's phone battery dies, so he tries to listen to what Lisa is listening to and discovers Marc Maron's podcast. He hears an interview with Krusty, who becomes upset when Marc mentions the movie The Sands of Space, prompting Krusty to recount the story behind the film.

Krusty begins his involvement as a star on the movie Good Cop, Dog Cop. When a sequel, Good Cop, Dog Cop 2: Golden Revolver, is proposed, Krusty instead suggests producing a movie adaptation of the book The Sands of Space.

Marge and Homer are hired as production assistants, along with other Springfielders, and the crew travels to Mexico to film. However, the production begins to unravel when Krusty argues with the director, who subsequently leaves. Krusty takes over as director but quickly breaks down, not knowing how to proceed.

Marge steps in to help, and Krusty hires her as his assistant director to make decisions on his behalf. Her new role begins to interfere with her relationship with Homer, and Krusty attempts to sabotage their romance. Although he pretends to support them, he secretly plots against Homer by assigning him difficult and dangerous tasks on set.

Homer is sent to retrieve a lizard during a sandstorm, falls down a ravine, and lies unconscious, awaiting death. Hallucinations of cacti versions of Bart, Lisa, and Maggie convince him to keep going, but he is captured. Krusty refuses to rescue him, but the crew rallies and stages a rescue using the movie's fake weapons. Ultimately, Marge must sell the movie itself to the captors in order to secure Homer's release. Following this, Krusty's film career collapses, and he returns to children's television.

Back home, Bart and Lisa ask Homer and Marge what it was like working on the movie, what happened to the film, and whether Krusty ever saw it. In Mexico, at the El Bozo Loco theater, the movie is shown, and Krusty discovers the audience sees it as a comedy, laughing at the ending.

Production[edit]

A joke cut about about movies in the late '80s was Krusty saying: "Nowadays, movies are all made by giant corporations, but back then, movies were made by medium-sized corporations."[1] A song for Peabo Bryson to sing over was going to be written but the team forgot to.[2]
