Cultural references
- The episode title is likely either a pun on the song "Dazed and Confused" or a reference to the film of the same name.
- Superintendent Chalmers forces everyone to pray and Seymour Skinner reminds him that school prayer in the United States is banned in public schools.
- Database asks whether the new teacher, Jack Lassen, has OCD (Obsessive–compulsive disorder).
- Bart says he is going to have the new teacher "kneeling before Zod", with General Zod being a DC Comics supervillain.
- Mr. Lassen mentions HBO.
- Wiccapedia is a parody of Wikipedia.
- According to Jack Lassen's Wiccapedia article, his parents named him named after US president Jack Kennedy (JFK) although they mistook him for Robert "Bobby" F. Kennedy.
- Lisa made a report on Eleanor Roosevelt. Eleanor served as the first lady of the United States from 1933 to 1945, during her husband President Franklin D. Roosevelt's terms in office. She was also a feminist writer and activist.
- Milhouse parodies Jack Nicholson's "Here's Johnny!" scene from the 1980 film The Shining when Lassen creates a hole on the blackboard.
- Bart refers to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey when he is planning his revenge on Lassen. The Hobbit was partially filmed in New Zealand and Milhouse highlights this country's attractive landscapes and tax credits that make it a filmmaking paradise.
- Ms. Hoover is reading To Saur, with Love, a parody of To Sir, with Love.
- The social network Facelook is a parody of "Facebook"
- When Homer is talking on the phone to the park ranger, he tries to book the campsite where "the guy in the hockey mask kills all the campers". He was referring to Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th, who suddenly appears and attacks the ranger.
- Blazing Guy is a parody of Burning Man, an event focused on community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance held annually in the western United States.
- The song "A-Camping We Will Go" is a parody of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot", an African-American spiritual song.
- Disneyland is mentioned in the song.
- In the Blazing Guy camp, the house from the American sitcom Leave It to Beaver can be seen under a "Leave it, Beaver" sign.
- Marge brought Cheerios cereal to the camp.
- After consuming adulterated tea, Marge thinks Homer is Mr. Clean, the mascot of the cleaning product of the same name.
- One of the Blazing Guy participants is dressed like Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters.
Continuity
- The Spirit guide is seen. ("El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Jomer")
- Principal Skinner's photo of himself in his army uniform is seen again ("Sweet Seymour Skinner's Baadasssss Song")
- A picture of Mr. Kuferberg is seen on the fake Miss Hoover Facelook page created by Bart. ("The President Wore Pearls")
- Nelson mentions how he hoped no one would think of his name as "Smellson" but in "New Kids on the Blecch", Mad magazine called him exactly that and he laughed at it.
