Synopsis
- After the theft of the money from the church collection box, Ned Flanders is on the case as he tracks down the thief.
Plot
Ned Flanders arrives late to the First Church of Springfield committee meeting as Reverend Lovejoy opens the collection box and finds that the money has been stolen. Since Ned won the Dave "Mr. Snoopy" Nagelman's Detective Correspondence Kit in the church charity auction the other day, Lovejoy puts Ned on the case of tracking down the thief. Ned finds that a key was left in the collection box, which is his first clue. Ned goes to Chief Wiggum to get permission to tackle the case and bribes the chief with donuts. He then begins to question anybody who regularly had access to the church. However, he can't uncover a single clue until somebody shoots at him.
Ned gets the license plate of the car the shots came from and goes to Chief Wiggum for help identifying who owns the car. The chief tells Ned that Patty and Selma own it, but they say that the car was stolen, which they had already reported to the police. Ned goes to the Kwik-E-Mart, which is next to where he was shot at. He asks Apu for the security camera footage, which he initially refuses to hand over. When Ned threatens to call the health inspector, Apu lets him see it, and they discover that a nun tried to kill him.
Ned goes back to Reverend Lovejoy with his findings, but Lovejoy tells him that there hasn't been a nun at the church since St. Abernathy's picketed them for unfair competition. Ned waits around, hoping to see the nun again, and eventually sees her driving the stolen car. He follows the nun to Krusty's Indian Reservation Hotel & Casino, where the nun goes gambling. After a while, the nun heads to the presidential suite, and Ned finds that the key he found at the church fits the lock of the door. Ned confronts the nun and finds that it's actually Reverend Lovejoy, who is hypnotized. Ned snaps Lovejoy out of the hypnosis and realizes who is responsible for the crime.
Ned and the police raid Herman's Military Antiques to arrest Herman. Herman was at the charity auction where he won the Hypnohead's Mind Control Kit, which he used to hypnotize Reverend Lovejoy. Ned gets the money back and hands it to Reverend Lovejoy. Meanwhile, in the police car, Herman hypnotizes Chief Wiggum.
