Cultural references
- The episode title is a reference to The Beatles 1966 song "Yellow Submarine".
- During the film promoting the submarine ride, the submarine jumps over a dock, a reference to Free Willy.
- The name "John Jacob Jingleheimer Chun", seen on Skinner's list of names, is a reference to the song "John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt".
- "Spugna Roberto Quadrati Pantaloni" is a Italian parodied version of SpongeBob SquarePants.
- The episode shown is a parody of the Season 2 SpongeBob episode, “Dying for Pie”. However, the roles are reversed. In the original, Squidward gives SpongeBob a pie (which neither of them knew was a bomb), and in the parody, SpongeBob gives Squidward a World War landmine, which blows up.
- The woman and the man trapped in space is a reference to the movie Gravity starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.
- During Seymour's dream at the beginning of the episode is a reference to Quentin Tarantino film Django Unchained.

- This episode reveals the last names (and in some cases first names) of several Springfield Elementary students including Lewis, Sherri, Terri, Cosine, Report Card and Database.
Continuity
- The tagline "Yvon eht nioj" ("Join the Navy" spelled backwards) is seen during the film promoting the submarine ride. The tagline was previously seen in "New Kids on the Blecch".
- Homer says he'll need to fake his own death someday. He faked his death in "Mother Simpson".
Goofs
- When Skinner crosses Wendell's name off the list, several names disappear and are replaced with Cosine Tangent, Scabies Spuckler and Sniffles Spuckler, also Hubert Wong's name suddenly appears on the list.
- In the large shot of the gym, there are duplicates of Richard, Lewis Clark and Nina Skalka visible.
- Dr. Hibbert's children are seen at the assembly, even though they go to a different school.
- On Skinner's list, the surnames of Wendell and Dolph are incorrect - respectively, "Queasy" instead of "Borton", and "Shapiro" instead of "Starbeam".
