Pen Pals is a Bart Simpson story first printed in Bart Simpson #93.
Synopsis[edit]
- "Bart has a plan of his own to get Lisa's goat when he poses as a pen pal from a distant land."
Plot[edit]
The students at the Springfield Elementary School are each given a foreign pen pal, and will do a presentation about their home countries next month. Lisa is delighted to write her first letter to Svetlana in Lichtenslava, but Bart does not care much about his pen pal. Lisa asks Bart to post her first letter. Bart opens it and decides not to post it. Instead, he writes a letter pretending to be Svetlana. After a while, Lisa gets a response. She learns that in Lichtenslava, snail mail is lame, they fish with gummy worms as bait, they defeated the Martians in 1957 and touch ears instead of shaking hands.
Lisa is astonished over the letter she received, and Bart tells her to respect others' culture and send a reply. Bart responds to the letter as Svetlana, saying that they go bobsledding in school, their national anthem is played on the kazoo and they have a Festival of Chafing. In the next letter, he writes that Generalissimo Monsanto has won the election and plans to eliminate all Wednesdays, and into the future he will remove all vowels from their alphabet.
When the students do their presentations, Lisa reveals that she had Bart as her pen pal, and tells him that she found true information by doing a Google Search. She also found that Svetlana misspelled the name of the country, there were Squishee stains on the letters and their home address is the return address. Lisa gets an A and Bart gets an F, because he didn't write to his pen pal and was too busy writing letters to Lisa. Bart apologizes to Lisa for what he did. Lisa tells Bart that he should read his letter from his pen pal. Bart reads it and then throws it in the garbage when he realizes that the letter is a scam sent by a "Nigerian Prince".
