• The opening scene is a parody of Gunsmoke's opening and references how the show surpasses Gunsmoke's previous record with this episode. The series' main character Matt Dilon appears in it too.

Trivia

• When this episode airs, The Simpsons will surpass Gunsmoke as the longest running scripted American primetime television series (by episode count).
