Opening scene
- Homer is dressed as a trash bin version of Bender from Futurama.
- Maggie is dressed as Charlie Chaplin, but afterwards she changes to her look as Alex from A Clockwork Orange and turns to violence towards the bad guys.
- Homer has a election pin with "Ivanka 2028" written on it. This is a reference to Donald Trump daughter, Ivanka Trump.
- Frank Grimes mentions that this is the 600th episode saying "In hell they make you watch them all in a row". This is a reference to the FXX 13 days marathon, showing all the episodes of the show in a row.
- The lion on the left has a Guy Fawkes mask and the store is named "V. Appliances and Repairs", both referencing V for Vendetta in which the Guy Fawkes mask figures prominently.
- The lion on the right has a Darth Vader mask, referencing Star Wars.

- The theme of the first part of the episode is based on the Hunger Games.
- The title of this segment is a reference to Die Hard.
- When Lisa refers to a "drought of Chicago Cubs proportions" she is alluding to the longest drought in major league baseball, that of the Chicago Cubs, which as of this episode had not won a World Series siince 1908.
- Milhouse tries to slide on a dry Slosh 'N' Splash by Bam-O, a reference to Slip 'N Slide by Wham-O.
- Homer holds a bottle of Amstel Blight, a reference to Amstel Light.
- Mr. Burns scene of pouring the water on himself is a reference to Flashdance.
- The scene with the cars heading toward the reservior is a reference to Mad Max: Fury Road, with Otto being Immortan Joe, Willie being Doof Warrior, and the heads on pole a reference to the people on the poles in the movie.
- The head coming out of Disco Stu's chest is a reference to Kuato from 1990's Total Recall.
- Drederick Tatum's vehicle is similar to Axel's from Twisted Metal.
- Dusty Springfield is a reference to the singer with the same name.

- Homer is drinking Logan's Rum, a reference to the movie Logan's Run, with the label looking like the movie poster.

- The name of this segment is a parody of Goldfinger, a movie from the James Bond series.

- This is the first time Kang or Kodos doesn't speak Rigellian (which, by coincidence, is identical to English).
