Cultural references
- The episode title is a reference to John Steinbeck's final novel, published in 1961, The Winter of Our Discontent.
- The Itchy & Scratchy Show episode, "Downton Tabby", is a parody of Downton Abbey, which was previously parodied in the Season 24 episode, "Dangers on a Train".
- Some of the bully groups names are: The Blink Sneaks, Krusty's Kids, the Purple Nurples, Scary Potters and the Baseball Furries.
- A Shrek doll makes an appearance and says "Donkey!" when stepped on.
- The bully summit was based on the 1979 movie "The Warriors".
- The station name "Jerk Circle", seen on the subway map, is likely a reference to the sexual practice circle jerk.
- The song playing at the end of the episode when the credits roll is "In the City" performed by Joe Walsh. This song was also in the movie "The Warriors" which was also parodied in this episode.

Goofs
- In the first shot of the school locker room, the buck-toothed boy has black skin.
- Coach Krupt hands out towels, however for the rest of the scene there are no towels in sight.
- Lewis is seen holding his shirt then in the very next shot it vanishes.
- The buck-toothed boy is missing his buck tooth.
- Throughout most of the locker room scene, Richard isn't wearing shorts but has a shirt, however when Coach Krupt says "what's wrong with you?", Richard's shorts reappear and his shirt vanishes.
- Homer says that his grandfather (Abe's father) is still alive. However, it has already been established that Orville Simpson is dead and he was even seen in Heaven in "Bart Gets Hit by a Car".
