In the real world WWII was the costliest war in history,with more than 50,000,000 casualties. The war in Europe ended after the surrender of the Nazis, and the war in the Pacific ended after the U.S. deployment of atomic bombs.
In the Simpsons Universe, the war had a huge effect on the lives of many characters.
In 1944, Abe Simpson was stationed in the Ardennes region, where he and the Flying Hellfish were ordered to assassinate Adolf Hitler, the German leader. They would have succeeded if not for Montgomery Burns, who caused Abe to miss Hitler, hitting his hat instead.
