- The comic title is a reference to Gene Simmons of KISS, who wrote the story, and their song "God of Thunder".
- Gene Simmons and KISS make appearances in the story, with Simmons being Bart's biological father.
- Bart tells the students to consider themselves "animalized" and calls them his little "creatures of the night," a reference to the albums Animalize and Creatures of the Night.
- Bart refers to himself as "king of the nighttime world", a reference to the song "King of the Night Time World" from Destroyer.
- Bart says that every day will be Free Comics Day and holds up a copy of KISS comics. KISS has real comics from multiple different publishers.
- In Bart's victory speech, he says that he's "the lord of this wasteland" and a modern day "boy of steel", both of which are lyrics from "God of Thunder".
- Ralph turns into Hello Kitty when Bart "animalizes" the students.
- Lisa tells Bart that greatness comes from within, not from a freak accident with a radioactive spider, a gamma bomb, or finding a magic lantern, a reference to Spider-Man from Marvel Comics, Radioactive Man, and Green Lantern from DC Comics.
