Cultural references
- The episode title is a reference to the TV series Black Mirror.
The Way We Wasn't
- The title of the segment is a reference to the episode "The Way We Was".
- Lupé the Snoopé is a parody of Dora the Explorer.
- The flashback to Homer in his 70s Sports Car features him singing "The Joker" by Steve Miller Band. Homer sings part of the song in the present.
- In the flashback, Princidpal Dondelinger refers to Homer and Barney as "Springfield's answer to Cheech and Chong".
- "(They Long to Be) Close to You" by the Carpenters plays when Homer sees Lydia.
- Lenny, Carl, and Barney went to see the Star Wars film Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. Lenny says that he can't believe the Empire struck back and asks if the Jedi will ever return, a reference to Return of the Jedi.

Trivia
- Mr. Seckofsky, the woodshop teacher at Springfield High School, makes his second appearance in the show, thirty-five years after his debut in season 2's "The Way We Was". This marks the longest gap between appearances of any Simpsons character, breaking the record previously kept by B. F. Sherwood, who appeared in the short "Family Therapy" and the season 23 episode "How I Wet Your Mother", a gap of twenty-three years.
