Cultural references[edit]
- The episode title is a reference to the Bravo reality TV series The Real Housewives of..., which is itself a play on the ABC comedy/drama/mystery series Desperate Housewives.
- The episode's couch gag takes place in the store Million Dollar Video, a pun on Million Dollar Baby. The films on sale include:
- How to Lose a Guy in 50 Years, a parody of the 2003 romantic comedy How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
- The Abyss, a real 1980 sci-fi film.
- The Planet from Outer Space, a pun on Plan 9 from Outer Space.
- When Harry Became Sally, a parody of the 1989 romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally....
- The State Area of the Apes, a pun on the Planet of the Apes franchise.
- The People vs. Godzilla, a pun on The People vs. Larry Flynt and Godzilla.

- Andrea Bocelli's "Con te partirò", one of the best-selling singles of all time, is heard when Fat Tony dates Selma.
- Springfield has its own Four Seasons, part of the real-world chain of hotels.
- Comic Book Guy once bought Selma a ping-pong table on craigslist, a classified advertisements website.
- During Selma and Fat Tony's wedding, Homer remembered the 1985 World Series which the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team lost against the Kansas City Royals.
- When Otto takes the mushrooms Bart found, he says that he is ready to watch Koyaanisqatsi, a 1982 American non-narrative documentary film which comprises a montage of stock footage, slow motion, and time-lapse visuals of natural and urban environments across the United States.

- Fat Tony's niece and nephews are parodies of people from the reality TV show Jersey Shore. Vincent, "The Occurrence", is a parody of The Situation, and Tushie is a parody of Snooki.

- This episode bears a reference to the in-show show "The Real Housewives of Shelbyville" as seen in "Boy Meets Curl".
- When Lisa is in the woods with Bart enjoying the lollipop, she actually leaves a plastic bottle in nature upon discovering that Bart can smell truffles.
- Marge reveals that Disco Stu and Selma's marriage ended because Selma did not care for disco music.
Goofs[edit]
- Marge's head animation is slightly wider in some scenes of this episode.
- When Bart catches the scent of truffles and runs up the stairs to the first floor, the scent leads him into the door of Homer and Marge's bedroom. However, once inside the room, it is Lisa's. And, inside Lisa's room, a corridor leading to the other rooms can be seen opposite the room.
- The door which leads to the Simpsons' basement is rectangular shaped rather than its usual circular shape.
- Cletus' shack is strangely next to Springfield Elementary School.
- When Homer and Marge arrive at the back of Fat Tony's house, the woman speaking sometimes closes her mouth while she is still speaking.
- Fat Tony's mother, when praying, does not open her mouth when she prays.
- Fat Tony's wife didn't have a big ring on her finger before and after the scene where she showed it.
- Primo and Dante Calabresi, Jr. are visible at the wedding despite the fact that they are both dead.
