Mabel Simpson was the great-great-great-grandmother of Homer Simpson. Mabel's first husband was Hiram Simpson (with whom she had one child, Eliza), and her second husband was Virgil (with whom she had another child, Abraham).
After freeing Virgil from slavery at Colonel Burns' Mansion, Eliza took him back to her house so he could hide out. Mabel was supportive of Eliza, but Hiram was initially against keeping him. After trying some of Virgil's "wheel cakes," Hiram vowed to keep him safe. However, Colonel Burns found where Virgil was hiding out. Colonel Burns bribed Hiram with a "pleasant surprise" to tell him where Virgil was, while Eliza kept quiet. This surprise turned out to be a pair of new shoes. Hiram told Burns that Virgil was in the turnip shed, but when he got there, he found Mabel pointing a shotgun at him. Mabel and Virgil then ran off together to go to Canada...
