Cultural references[edit]
- The title of the episode is a reference to the film Mr. Holland's Opus.
- Homer imagines Albert Einstein inventing the Led light up shoes.
- Lisa's fantasy Harvard boyfriend is a parody of Oliver Barrett IV from the movie Love Story. Lisa using magic by nose-twitching and accompanying sound effect are referencing TV show Bewitched. The man planting a sign on the crumble building is Harvard founder John Harvard.
- The Devil mentions Universal Studios and references the Flaming Moe drink being expensive there.
- In the song "Those Were the Days":
- The song is a parody of the theme song for All in the Family.
- Homer mentions Nirvana and What's Eating Gilbert Grape.
- Marge mentions Jar Jar Binks and Qui-Gon Jinn characters from Star Wars.
- Homer and Marge mention Richard Simmons.
- The sign "Harvard College Even Our Dropouts Are Billionaires" is a reference to Bill Gates, who dropped out of Harvard to found Microsoft.

Goofs[edit]
- Abraham Simpson appears in coma. However, in "Barthood", he's dead.
- When Lisa is seen as a baby, Marge's hairstyle is the one she had in "That '90s Show", though she always had her hair up in a beehive since she was pregnant with Bart.
- The school bus says "Springfield Elementary School" though she's in high school, and Bart's hair changes.
