Cultural references
- The title of the episode is a reference to the fictional character Atticus Finch from the 1960 novel To Kill a Mockingbird.
- Lisa is reading the novel in the episode. Later, Homer and her watch movie based on the novel. Afterwards Bart reads a parody of it called To Mock a Killing Bird.
- Watching the movie, Homer holds two opposing pennants: one with lettering "Yay Radley" and one with "Boo Radley", Boo Radley being a key character in the story.
- In the school play, Nelson plays a parody of Anton Chigurh from No Country for Old Men.
- The shops at Springfield Mall:
- Poverty Barn is a parody of Pottery Barn.
- Toys Were Us is a parody of Toys "R" Us.
