History
Homer notices an ad for an essay contest in which the winner receives an all expense paid trip to Washington D.C., Lisa retrieves the magazine and reads more about the essay contest; she decides to write an essay and enter the contest.

- Nelson Muntz from Springfield, Springfield's state - "Burn, Baby, Burn"
- Lisa Simpson from Springfield, Springfield's state - "The Roots of Democracy" (Winner)
The Springfield regional finals was held at the Veterans of Popular Wars, and judges include Jasper Beardsley.

The finals were held at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., the judges include Chilton Danes, Wilson DeFarge, Brad Fletcher, and Alonzo Flowers.
Troung won the competition and was presented with a giant check for $10,000.
