Labor Pains is an Itchy & Scratchy Comics story first printed in Itchy & Scratchy Comics #3. It is the first part of a three-part story, followed by When Bongos Collide! and The Final Collision.

Synopsis

After taking another beating from Itchy, Scratchy decides to quit making cartoons.

Plot

Scratchy goes through another day of beatings from Itchy, getting strapped to a roller coaster and attacked by a giant Itchy robot. However, the cameraman forgot to put film in the camera, meaning he had to go through the violence again. Scratchy decides that he's had enough and quits, saying that the job is not worth his salary.

Producer L.B. Mayhem tells Itchy not to worry, as they can find him a new co-star to work with. However, his heart is not in attacking each new co-star Itchy tries out, as he misses Scratchy. Itchy decides that he'll try to get Scratchy to come back to the show. Meanwhile, Scratchy decides he'll find another job. He goes to Burger Playground and gets a job there working the drive-through window. However, his first customer turns out to be Itchy, who yells down the speaker with a megaphone. While Scratchy gets Itchy's order ready, Itchy enters the restaurant and unplugs the french fry maker. Scratchy tries to unjam the machine and Itchy turns it on, injuring Scratchy. The next customer is then horrified to find bits of Scratchy in his burger.

After leaving St. Kit's Hospital, Scratchy goes to look for another job and finds an ad for an office boy in the Daily Fishwrap. He goes back home to get ready for the interview, although he does not notice Itchy at his window. Itchy replaces Scratchy's towel with sandpaper and pours nuclear waste into Scratchy's water heater. Despite these setbacks, Scratchy continues getting ready for the job, but Itchy ties him to a long rope attached to a bus.

Scratchy gets the job and is made to sharpen many crates of pencils. Itchy puts Scratchy's tail into the pencil box, which Scratchy accidentally sharpens. Scratchy's next task is to make copies of a large stack of documents. Itchy pours thumbtacks on the ground, causing Scratchy to jump in pain and land on the copier. Itchy then makes many copies of Scratchy's face.

In the days that follow, Scratchy tries out many different lines of work but keeps getting injured in each one. Eventually, Scratchy has had enough and plans to throw himself off a bridge into shark-infested water. Before he can, a car drives by with a producer from Mammoth Pictures in it. He tells Scratchy that he loves his films and has a job that will be perfect for him. Scratchy's new co-star is Lion L. Barryroar, who is well spoken and recites Shakespeare. Everyone gets ready to record the new movie, but nobody tells Scratchy what to do. Barryroar's character then knocks down a door and shoots Scratchy multiple times before sending other troops to attack Scratchy. After filming the violent scenes, the cameraman realizes he forgot to take the lens cap off the camera, and they have to film again.

Scratchy goes back to L.B. Mayhem to beg for his old job back. He agrees to give it back, but for half his original salary. Scratchy goes to tell Itchy that he has returned, which makes Itchy happy. What Scratchy does not see is that Itchy has a film producer costume, showing that he was actually the producer for Mammoth Pictures in disguise. Minutes later on the set, Itchy and Scratchy get back to their usual antics, with Itchy crushing Scratchy under a bulldozer.

In the real world, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie are watching The Krusty the Clown Show, who has just finished showing that Itchy & Scratchy episode. They hear a noise from the roof and the TV cuts out. Bart and Lisa go to try to fix it and the TV starts glowing. Maggie gets caught in weird energy emitting from the television, and Itchy and Scratchy come out of the TV and into the real world. The pair immediately start causing havoc, with Itchy attacking Scratchy. When Bart gets hit by a piece of a houseplant that Itchy cuts up, he realizes that Itchy and Scratchy are real and can cause harm. The two of them then break through the wall, with Itchy chasing Scratchy into town.
