- The episode title is a reference to The Beatles 1966 song "Yellow Submarine".
- During the film promoting the submarine ride, the submarine jumps over a dock, a reference to Free Willy.
- The name "John Jacob Jingleheimer Chun", seen onf Skinner's list of names, is a reference to the song "John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt".
Trivia
- This episode reveals the last names (and in some cases first names) of several Springfield Elementary students including Lewis, Sherri, Terri, Cosine, Report Card and Database.
Continuity
- The tagline "Yvon eht nioj" ("Join the Navy" spelled backwards) is seen during the film promoting the submarine ride. The tagline was previously seen in "New Kids on the Blecch".
Goofs
- When Skinner crosses Wendell's name off the list, several names disappear and are replaced with Cosine Tangent, Scabies Spuckler and Sniffles Spuckler, also Hubert Wong's name suddenly appears on the list.
- In the large shot of the gym, there are duplicates of Richard, Lewis Clark and Melissa visible.
- Dr. Hibbert's children are seen at the assembly, even though they go to a different school.
