- The title is a pun on "The Bard", a term used to describe William Shakespeare due to his status as a renowned poet, and the phrase "hard boiled".
- The plot consists of an anthology of stories based on the works of Shakespeare. The stories featured are Antony and Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, Henry V, Romeo and Juliet, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Richard III, Titus Andronicus and King Lear. Other Shakespeare references include the story opening with the students performing Troilus and Cressida, Bart comparing stealing the parents' wallets to A Midsummer Night's Dream and the story ending with Bart saying "All's Well That Ends Well".
