Cultural references
- Bart's vision of Marie and Pierre Curie, inventors of radium, are much like Godzilla, complete with the Japan setting.
- Smithers' song and dance number at Jack Marley's retirement party are reference to the 1941 film, Citizen Kane.
- The music from The Empire Strikes Back plays while Mr. Burns surveys his monitors in his office.

Goofs
- Lisa claims that Pierre and Marie Curie both died of radiation poisoning. Only Marie Curie's death was due to radiation poisoning. Pierre Curie died of a fractured skull as a result of an accident with a horse carriage.
- When Mr. Burns is drawing on the camera with Marge on it, we can see devil horns and a goatee, however when the camera zooms out and Mr Burns is drawing flies, the horns and goatee disappear.
- When talking to Marge, the spots on Mr. Burns head disappear for a second.
- In the film with Troy McClure, in one shot, the paintbrush is transparent.
- In some scenes before the house repair is done, the house is not slanted.
- In one scene in Burns' office, the picture of him on the wall is squashed and not drawn correctly. In the next shot, it is corrected, and in the next scene with the picture, it has been flipped.
