Fast-Food Boulevard, also known as Springfield's Fast Food District, is a street lined with many fast food restaurants. It was built in 1972 and was destroyed in a chain-reaction explosion caused by Homer Simpson.
History
Destruction
Homer had promised Marge that he would start a new diet, but he first went to Fast-Food Boulevard for a last-minute junk food binge and ate food from several restaurants, including Krusty Burger. At Krusty Burger, Homer spotted a talking wastebasket in the drive-thru and decided to use it to throw away the debris from his binge. After that, he decided to take the opportunity to get rid of all the accumulated trash in his car. Among the items Homer threw away was a leaky car battery. Acid from the battery seeped into the ground, dripped onto an underground gas main and ate a hole in the pipe, causing a gas leak. Meanwhile, Homer finished with his trash disposal and lit up a cigar. He then tossed the lit match into the wastebasket where it ignited the leaking gas and triggered a chain-reaction explosion. As one restaurant after another blew up, causing people to flee in panic (and Hans Moleman to be crushed by a large piece of debris), Homer obliviously drove away, puffing on his cigar.
In all, 37 restaurants were destroyed in the explosion. As a direct result, several of the stores' mascots, such as Cheesy McMayor and Rib-It (the Ribwich mascot from Krusty Burger), were left both jobless and homeless. Springfield held a town meeting at which the citizens called for the immediate rebuilding of Fast-Food Boulevard. To fund the rebuilding, Mayor Quimby called for a bond issue to be placed on the ballot for the next election, which was the Springfield Presidential primary. When Lenny reminded him that the primary wasn't until June (several months away), Quimby moved the primary election up to the next week, which resulted in Springfield having the earliest primary in the nation, even earlier than New Hampshire.
