The Nuclear Power Plant Championship was a drag race at the Springfield Dragway.
History
The Nuclear Power Plant Championship was held at the Springfield Dragway as the featured race of the evening. Mr. Burns was watching from the stands with Smithers and initially became frustrated because the two cars completed the quarter-mile race in only a few seconds. He ordered Smithers to tell the drivers to keep the cars in first gear for a couple of laps and make the race slower. The drivers complied, racing at an unusually low speed while Burns enthusiastically encouraged them to go faster and then immediately demanded that they slow down. After they crossed the finish line, the drivers released their parachutes, although the parachutes failed to open. Burns nevertheless declared the race excellent.
