Cultural references
- Springfield holds a festival celebrating the works of author Mark Twain.
- Bart plays the role of Bart Fink, based on brawler and river boatman Mike Fink.
- Milhouse plays the role of Huckleberry Finn, Nelson plays the role of Tom Sawyer, and Martin plays Becky Thatcher from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Sawyer mentions his Aunt Polly, also from the book.
- Bart says that he can shoot an apple off the barkeep's (Kearney) head, a reference to the legendary folk hero William Tell.
- During the play, Bart also parodies scenes from Indiana Jones and Star Wars.
- Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn fight against Injun Apu with lightsabers.
- Bart says "kiss my grits," which was the catchphrase of Florence Jean "Flo" Castleberry in the sitcoms Alice and Flo.
- Nelson says "and this time... ...it's personal," a reference to the tagline to the Jaws sequel Jaws: The Revenge.
