The Mystery of the Pesky Desk is a Bart Simpson story first printed in Bart Simpson #53.

Synopsis

After Lisa's class is forced to move to a disused classroom, Lisa sits at a jinxed desk. While the desk causes Lisa to become more popular, she searches for the reason the desk is jinxed.

Plot

School starts for the day and Lisa's class is surprised to find that their classroom has vanished. Lisa suggests that they use the empty classroom on the ground floor, but Miss Hoover says that there's something wrong with that room. Lisa thinks that it's just superstition and that there's nothing wrong with the room. Meanwhile, Bart walks away from the school with Homer's tools, having put a fake wall over the classroom door.

When Lisa's class gets to the disused classroom, Miss Hoover has the students take their usual positions, but tells Lisa not to take her desk because it's jinxed. Lisa tells Miss Hoover that everybody knows jinxes aren't real and takes the desk anyway. She also tells Miss Hoover that she'll prove it's not jinxed by taking a pop quiz. When the quiz starts, Lisa notices that the names Clancy Wiggum, Barney Gumble, and Homer Simpson are all etched into the desk, three people that she knows are ne'er-do-wells, and she thinks that there may be something to the jinx. Time for the pop quiz runs out and Miss Hoover finds that Lisa hasn't answered a single question, getting an F. Still not wanting to believe in the jinx, Lisa goes to Principal Skinner, who tells her not to sit at the desk because her grades lowering would pull down the school's average.

The next day, Lisa sits at the desk again and ends up insulting Miss Hoover. Her class is impressed, thinking that the desk is making her cool. As she leaves school for the day, her head starts to clear up and she gets an idea. Shortly after, Lisa returns to class in a spacesuit, which was her science project from last year. The kids in class think Lisa's cool for doing Halloween in April, until Lisa demands another pop quiz to prove a point. However, a gust of wind blows her paper off the desk and when she bends down to get it, the suit helmet comes off and Lisa becomes affected by the jinx again. She shouts at Miss Hoover once more and moons the class before she leaves.

Outside school, Lisa sees Bart with the tools and asks him to help her solve the mystery by breaking into the school's basement. Bart agrees to help and they enter the basement to find a wooden structure that doesn't fit in with the rest of the building. She tells Bart to break down the wall and they find an antique still for making moonshine. Groundskeeper Willie shows up and is annoyed at them for breaking down the wall to his scotch-making contraption when they could have just broken the padlock on the door. Willie begins to threaten them into not telling anybody about the still, but Principal Skinner shows up. He takes the sledgehammer from Bart and realizes what happened to Miss Hoover's classroom after seeing the false walls around the still. Skinner then accidentally throws the hammer into the still while spinning it around, breaking the still. Skinner tells Willie to clean up the mess and takes Bart and the sledgehammer away while Lisa tries to comfort Willie, who throws Lisa out of the basement.

Outside Miss Hoover's classroom, Skinner has Bart destroy the false wall he put up. As he does so, the students think Bart is cool and ask why Lisa can't be as cool as her brother.
