Cultural references

• The episode title is a reference to Paul Simon's song "Graceland", in which he repeatedly sings the line "I'm going to Graceland".
• During the "Ice Cream Social" event held at the First Church of Springfield:
  • Cruci-Fixin's is a pun on Crucifixion. The flavors Reverend Lovejoy introduces, "Blessed Virgin Berry", "Command-Mint", and "Bible-Gum", are a pun on the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Commandment, and the Bible, respectively. In a derogatory way, Lovejoy also alludes to Unitarianism, the nontrinitarian movement of Christianity.
  • Homer asks for one "Tower of Babel" made of ice cream.
  • According to Professor Frink, one of Mootilda's stomachs was filled with Freon, which is commonly used as a refrigerant.
  • Frink mentions Canadian actor Ivan Reitman after he is kicked by Mootilda.
  • Lovejoy introduces Rachel Jordan as the "Christian Madonna".
  • Lisa is amused that Rachel found a rhyme for Hezekiah, a king of Judah.
• The abandoned Storytime Village includes elements from stories such as Charlotte's Web, The Frog Prince, Mother Goose, "The Three Little Pigs", Pinocchio, and Hansel and Gretel.

In Disco Stu's vision of Heaven, notable figures from the late 1970s disco era can be seen, including John Travolta dressed as Tony Manero from Saturday Night Fever, as well as celebrities Liza Minnelli, Andy Warhol, and Halston, who were regular attendees at Studio 54, an iconic disco in 1970s New York City nightlife.

• In Disco Stu's discothèque vision of Heaven:
  • The background music is "Get Dancin'" by Disco Tex and the Sex-O-Lettes.
    • The song is heard again during the credits.
  • Saint Peter leads Stu into the disco, passing by a queue where several notable figures from the 1970s disco era can be seen:
    • John Travolta, dressed as his iconic character Tony Manero from the 1977 American dance drama film Saturday Night Fever.
    • Next in line are actress and singer Liza Minnelli, artist Andy Warhol, and fashion designer Halston. This is a reference to Studio 54, a former nightclub in New York City that was closely associated with the three, all of whom were prominent regulars during the late 1970s.
  • Frank Sinatra appears on the dance floor. When Stu asks Sinatra what he was doing there, Sinatra replies that for him, that was Hell. This alludes to Sinatra's rejection of post-swing popular music.
• In Comic Book Guy's vision of Heaven:
  • He is cast as Spock from Star Trek and is serving on board the Enterprise.
  • Captain Kirk's command chair starts shaking, and CBG says "Shazbot! My captain is in peril", referencing Mork & Mindy.
  • After CBG saves Kirk, Uhura says that she wants to make out with him, and so do Catwoman (Batman) and Agent 99 (Get Smart).
• Rachel Jordan reads about Praiseland in an American Automobile Association (AAA) magazine.

• This episode is a sequel to "Alone Again, Natura-Diddily".
• The last time something Ned owned leaked gas and created hallucinations was in "Skinner's Sense of Snow".
• The amusement park Ned purchases, Storytown Village, was first visited by the Simpsons in "Lisa the Vegetarian".

Goofs

• At the church Ice Cream Social, Homer and Marge are seen in two places.
• When the citizens are leaving the park in disappointment, Manjula, who is behind Apu, is yellow, has brown hair, and is wearing blue clothes.
  • Apu, despite being a practicing Hindu, goes to Praiseland, a Christianity-based theme park.
• Of all the outfits Ned preserved in the closet, not one of them was the outfit that Maude wore every day (pink vest/pink blouse/skirt ensemble).
• The hand stamp that says "PRAISELAND" is too big for most of the characters' hands.
• After Helen Lovejoy makes a very tall stack of ice cream scoops on the cone, she is wearing lipstick.
• When Professor Frink showcases his cow, Brandine Spuckler's belly is drawn the same color green as the top garment she wears instead of yellow.
• Once, when Martin Prince Sr. is seen among other attendees at the church's ice cream social, his hair is blond.
