- The story title is a reference to the film American History X.
- When Bart finds the open traffic sign booth, he says that it's like finding an abandoned gorilla suit and light saber factory, a reference to Star Wars.
- Bart's Mr. Tuber toy is a parody of Mr. Potato Head.
- When looking through the History book, Grampa reads about Pangaea and Thomas Edison.
- Grampa exclaims "what in the McGraw-Hill", a reference to McGraw Hill Education.
- Nelson pretends to be Abner Doubleday.
- Bart calls himself the "Bruce Vilanch" of his classmates.
- Milhouse answers the "Who is the father of our country?" question with Johnny Appleseed. Nelson then says that it's Paul Bunyan.
