Cultural references

• The episode title is a pun on the Discovery Channel documentary/reality TV show Deadliest Catch.
• During the montage of Ned and Edna dating:
  • The music playing is "Heaven Must Have Sent You" by The Elgins.
  • When they cross a creek, Ned parts the water with a staff, reminiscent of Moses and the Israelites crossing the Red Sea.
• The girls basketball team is called "Lady Pumas" parody of the singer Lady Gaga.
• The idea of Bart's teacher, Mrs. Krabappel living next door to him is similar to the sitcom Boy Meets World, where the main character Cory Matthews lives next door to his teacher, Mr. Feeny.

• Chalmers says "Skinner", not "SSKIIINNEERR!!".

• Ned says he and Edna have never been "formally introduced" despite meeting and talking multiple times in previous episodes, including going on a date with each other in "Alone Again, Natura-Diddily" where Ned was put off by Edna just using him to get Skinner jealous.

Notes

• In UK airings, a note at the scene where Marge tells viewers to go to thesimpsons.com to vote says "Unfortunately, voting is not available in this area", and a voiceover is heard over the credits by Homer and Marge, telling viewers that in reruns or on DVDs it's too late to vote.
