- The title and plot are parodies of "The Amazing Colossal Man".
- The cover parodies issue one of the Fantastic four.
- The cover of the magazine "Fortunate" is a reference to the title panel of the one page comic Keep on Truckin' by Robert Crumb.
- Mayor Quimby introduces Troy McClure as the star of Jagged Attraction and Look Who's Still Oinking, referencing the 1987 thriller film Fatal Attraction and the Look Who's Talking comedy film series.
Continuity
- The growth ray makes a return in I Shrink, Therefore I'm Small, where it has been converted into a shrink ray.
- Project Q, which is mentioned a number of times, would later be shown in Radioactive Homer.
