- Homer's song The Brandyman is a reference to The Candy Man from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

Continuity
- The plot is very similar to the episode "Homer the Moe", both of which feature Homer looking after Moe's bar and then opening his own bar when Moe returns to work. The episode aired in November 2001, almost a year after the comic was released.
