:Simpsons has a rather loose canon, made even more confusing by the floating timeline. The section on this page says "The team plays at the Double-A level and is often shown as drastically underfunded and struggling in competition. However, the team has also been shown to play in the Major League." It's been shown to play in two different leagues in two different episodes, therefore two different continuities. Another example is Grampa, who at one point has been a soldier in WWII, but has now been seen as a child in the 1940s due to the floating timeline. That's exactly why the industry terms "canonical" and "non canonical" are used, to separate a change in a pattern of continuity. | + | :I already explained the reasoning behind it. The Simpsons plays loose with canon, and sometimes changes are made like this and they can even flip between them. If we start labeling episodes as non-canon because of changes like this, we'd me making every single episode where Grampa has ever been mentioned to be in the war non-canon because he's now a kid in the 1940s, not an adult soldier. Or we'd be labeling every single modern episode as non-canon instead. We're not going to do that, so this is a compromise. We mention that different things have happened in different episodes. Matt Selman and some of the other producers don't really take continuity into account when writing episodes, so we need to start taking that approach too. It's not continuity though if it just happens once and doesn't continue, that's what "continuity" means. That's exactly why the industry terms "canonical" and "non canonical" are used, to separate a change in a pattern of continuity.
